Diary: Niels Lyngsø 2023

Fire Kasina Retreat in Denmark

Winter 2023

Niels Lyngsø (Danish writer and translator, born 1968) has had an intensive meditation practice since his first Goenka retreat in 2017, sitting roughly 1,000 hours per year, including an accumulated month of retreat time. For several years he was hanging a lot out on The Dharma Overground, and he considers himself part of the pragmatic dharma tradition. He is now guiding yogis seeking a serious meditation practice, his web site (in Danish) is www.pragmatiskbuddhisme.dk, and he can be contacted at niels [at] pragmatiskbuddhisme [dot] dk.

In December 2023 I did my first fire kasina retreat, a three-week solo retreat in my farmhouse in Denmark. The retreat was actually a combined fire kasina and dream yoga retreat, so I was literally practicing day and night, trying to maintain awareness/mindfulness as consistently as possible for the entirety of the three weeks. I had no fixed schedule, but formal fire kasina practice would take up around 12-14 hours per day. I have chosen not to report on the dream yoga elements of the retreat here, since it would have made the already long report much longer.

Part One covers the first week of the retreat.

Part Two covers the second week of the retreat.

Part Three covers the last week of the retreat and some concluding remarks, recorded two months later.

You can hear more about his retreat in a conversation with Daniel here.
